Nursing Times Award – Exeter Teams Shortlisted

The Living With and Beyond Cancer(LWBC) team, Breast Care Nurse Specialists and FORCE cancer charity are delighted to be shortlisted in this year’s NT awards, Cancer Nursing Category.Finalists announced for the Nursing Times Awards 2021 | Nursing Times

Using a co-production method they redesigned the breast cancer pathway involving FORCE oncology physiotherapist, oncology dietitian and a Cancer Support Worker (CSW) to optimise supported self-management for patients. By better understanding patients through holistic assessment and focus groups they were able to design and deliver a tailored re-habilitation program over 12 weeks supporting weight management and healthy lifestyle (key components of supported self-management as described in the NHS Long term plan). Patients attending the group sessions are recording sustainable lifestyle changes.

The teams are currently working alongside the Peninsula Cancer Alliance (PCA) to provide equitable support to people across Devon in an effective, cost-effective and sustainable way. Tina Grose ( Lead cancer Nurse RD&E) said “ This is an amazing initiative. Providing quality care for patients outside the acute hospital setting is making a real difference to patients not only in their approach to their healthcare but also in their ability to manage the unintentional side effects of treatments”.

The Awards will be held at the end of October and the PCA wishes them the best of luck !
